Stafford bird sale next Sunday 10th
Trip to Tenerife Conference
What a great success the conference was! Very interesting and some great speakers. Commercial breeder Eric Antheunisse (California)spoke 0n how to make the birds spin out for the pet market. Every thing he does is to make it as easy and quick as possible, as you can imagine with 2,000 pr. of birds. You have to be looking for quick ideas all the time. Some very helpful tips for the ordinary breeder, like hatching under silky hens. He has a row of small raised hutches with silkys brooding that he puts the eggs under. All his flights are raised so he has chickens running around keeping the floors clean and catching mice. He had it all on video.
Petra Wolf from Germany, one of the best bird nutritionists in the world described the value of the different seeds and foods.According to Petra, some of our feeding practices are wrong. Some things we thought weren’t good for the birds actually are,and other things we thought were beneficial may not be. It would make you look at the way you feed your birds and the mixes you use. There is a full printout of all the speeches that can be purchased from Loro Parque Foundation.
Of course, Dr.Matthias Reinschmidt spoke on the breeding successes in Loro Parque.Dr. Yara Barros from Brazil spoke on the Spix macaw .There are now 72 birds in captivity. The goal is to start to release some when the target of 150 is reached. This could be between 2016 to 2020.
I have to admit it’s hard to keep up with the interpreters as they seem to fall behind the speakers . but all and all it was very interesting. Meeting bird people from all around the world( in fact 32 countries)made me realise how lucky we are that most of them can speak English. We got invitations to visit aviaries in Denmark, the Czech Republic, Germany and, of course, our English friends
A visit to the breeding center to see the rare birds not on display in the park
THE ENTERTAINMENT AND FOOD WERE REALLY GOOD. IT WAS A GREAT IMPROVEMENT ON THE PREVIOUS YEAR
THE FIRST NIGHT,LIKE THE LAST TIME,WAS ON THE WATERFRONT WITH AS MUCH FOOD AS YOU COULD EAT : STEAKS, RIBS,CHICKEN, FISH,SALADS, 4 DIFFERENT DESSERTS AND A SUPPLY OF RED AND WHITE WINE.
A Mardi Gras display of dancers and tin drums paraded in and out of the tables
